Editorial in Annapurna Post on 14 May, 2017

May 14, 2017

Embassy's attention has been drawn to the editorial in Annapurna Post of 14 May 2017. It refers to a speech of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi purported to have been delivered recently on Buddha Purnima. This is to state that no such speech was delivered by PM Modi on Buddha Purnima, 2017. A speech was delivered two years back on 3 May 2015, about a week after the devastating earthquake in Nepal. In that speech, reference was made to the difficult situation in the wake of the death and destruction caused by the earthquake on 25 April 2015. It may be recalled that India was in the forefront of relief and rescue operations after the earthquake. Use of that speech for the editorial by Annapurna Post on 14 May 2017 is inappropriate and mischievous. It is yellow journalism at its highest. Embassy strongly condemns such unethical journalism and reiterates that these reports would not deter India from pursuing cooperation with the people and Government of Nepal for peace, stability and socio-economic development of Nepal.
