11th Meeting of India-Nepal Joint Committee on Inundation and Flood Management (JCIFM) Held

11th Meeting of India-Nepal Joint Committee on Inundation and Flood Management (JCIFM) was held in Janakpur and Kathmandu from April 16-21, 2017.  The meeting began in Janakpur on April 16, 2017 followed by site visits to the Kamala, Baghmati and Lal Bakaya rivers on April 17-18, 2017.  Sites requiring urgent and critical works were inspected, and works were recommended for the following five locations:

 

i.              Basbitta on left embankment of Kamala river;

ii.            Bandipur on left embankment of Kamala river;

iii.           Kirathpur on right embankment of Kamala river;

iv.           Badharwa on left bank of Bagmati river

v.            Laxminiya on the Lal Bakaya river.

 

2.         The formal talks were held in Kathmandu from April 19-21, 2017.  The Indian team was led by Shri A.K. Sinha, Member (Planning) of the Ganga Flood Control Commission and the Nepalese side was led by Shri Madhukar Prasad Rajbhandari, Director General of Department of Water Induced Disaster Management.  The following issues were discussed in the talks:

 

i.              Ongoing works and release of funds;

ii.            Flood forecasting issues;

iii.           Works on the rivers of West Rapti, Khando, Bhutahi Balan, Dodha and Mohana and Lakhandehi rivers.

iv.           Flood inundation issues on Mahali Sagar on Bairganiya Ring Bund, Rato, Lakhandehi and Meechi rivers.

 

3.         The JCIFM also discussed mechanism for proper coordination at field level and draft Terms of Reference for concurrent evaluation of ongoing inundation and flood management projects.  The next meeting of the JCIFM may be tentatively held in the last week of November 2017.
